A DIY enthusiast has created a fully portable PlayStation 4 handheld by transplanting PS4 internals into a bespoke handheld chassis, Push Square reports.
The build combines the console's core hardware with an integrated display, battery pack, controller inputs and custom cooling to deliver home-console-quality gaming on the move. The project follows a growing appetite for portable access to traditional console libraries, a trend highlighted by Nintendo's success with Switch, the rise of handheld PC devices and Sony's own PS Portal remote-play hardware.
The mod involved significant hardware and casework. Components were reconfigured to fit the compact form factor, with attention given to heat management and power delivery. The finished unit retains the PS4's native capabilities rather than relying on remote streaming, offering a self-contained experience at the cost of increased weight and likely reduced battery life compared with purpose-built handhelds.
Push Square's coverage notes that such projects are technically demanding and require dismantling a console, which voids warranties and carries electrical and thermal risks. The build serves as a demonstration of what is possible for skilled modders rather than a mass-market alternative to commercial handhelds.
Further details and images of the handheld conversion are available in Push Square's original report.
