It’s not only claimed a new State of Play is airing next month, but a long-rumoured God Of War spin-off should launch this year too.

With Xbox already getting its first showcase of 2026 out of the way, where it announced release dates and gameplay details for Forza Horizon 6 and Fable, everyone is left waiting for Sony and Nintendo to drop some big new reveals.

The Nintendo Direct from this past weekend only had a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to show and while another showcase is already scheduled for this week, it’s focusing entirely on the already announced Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream.

It is rumoured a third Nintendo Direct is happening in just a week’s time and now it’s said that Sony will follow that up with one of its own State of Play showcases.

Yesterday, insider NateTheHate, who has a good track record when it comes to Nintendo related leaks (such as the reveal date for the Nintendo Switch 2), claimed that a Nintendo Direct is happening on Thursday, February 5.

On X, he was also asked if a State of Play is coming in February too, to which he bluntly answered, ‘There will be, yes.’

This claim has since been backed up by Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb during his Game Mess Mornings podcast (from the 17:55 mark). Initially, he said it will air on Thursday, February 12 (just one week after the alleged Nintendo Direct) before backtracking and clarifying it’s aiming for that week.

At the very least, February is a safe bet for when a new State of Play could drop. Sony has aired one every February since 2021 though some of them featured multiple games (both from Sony and third-party studios) while others focused on only one.

What could be shown at the February 2026 State of Play?

Grubb has described the next State of Play as ‘pretty sizable’, which points to multiple announcements, but he also cautioned against getting too excited.

For 2026, Sony has three exclusives scheduled – Saros, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and Wolverine – so new footage and details for at least one of those should be shown. There could also be an update on Bungie’s Marathon reboot, which launches on March 5.

News on Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet would be welcome, but considering it’s reportedly not launching till 2027 at the earliest and has missed multiple production deadlines (per Bloomberg), Sony may still not be ready to show anything off.

As for wholly new announcements, perhaps the rumoured God Of War Metroidvania spin-off could make an appearance? Last year, several sources, including Grubb, claimed such a project was in the works and Grubb has continued to assert it exists.

‘I think that’s… extremely tangible,’ said Grubb when asked about the game, adding that he ‘absolutely’ expects it to launch this year. If that’s the case, a February State of Play would be an ideal time to announce it.

Grubb did previously claim this God Of War spin-off would launch in 2025 though he’s now said this was something people ‘on the corporate side’ of Sony were pushing for and not the actual developers: ‘The reality was, it was always aiming for 2026.’
