Sony has once again restricted its Days of Play discounts for PS Plus so that they are unavailable to active subscribers who simply want to extend their current tier. The annual promotion, which begins on 27 May, will discount 12‑month PS Plus subscriptions by as much as 33% but only for entirely new members or users upgrading to a higher tier.
Push Square reported the details of the promotion, noting that existing PS Plus members cannot apply the discounted rate to a like‑for‑like renewal or extension of their current tier. The offer therefore benefits new sign‑ups and those prepared to move up a tier, while those already paying for a service at the same level are excluded.
The practice is a recurring one for the platform holder and continues to draw criticism from the PlayStation community. Critics describe the move as penalising loyal subscribers by denying them access to the same promotional pricing available to newcomers and upgraders.
The Days of Play event has traditionally focused on bolstering subscriber numbers and encouraging tier upgrades, with the headline 33% reduction aimed at making annual plans more attractive. Sony has not announced any changes to renewal rules or introduced an option for active members to retroactively benefit from the promotional pricing.
The restriction is likely to frustrate long‑standing subscribers who expected the promotion to apply to all account holders. Push Square's coverage of the situation can be read in full at the original report.
Publishers and platform holders regularly structure promotions to target specific customer segments, and Days of Play remains focused on acquisition and upgrades rather than retention via discounted renewals.
