Naoki Hamaguchi on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's "Packed and Eventful" Development

Square Enix's director Naoki Hamaguchi has described the development cycle for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as "packed and eventful", amid preparations to bring the sequel to the Switch 2 and ongoing work on the trilogy's conclusion.

Hamaguchi emphasised the workload facing the team, saying "It's Rare For Me To Make Downtime" as developers balance the recent ports with new production. Mere months after Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade arrived on Switch 2, Square Enix is following with a port of Rebirth in June — a schedule the studio regards as an impressive accomplishment given concurrent commitments.

On the creative direction, Hamaguchi noted that "Rebirth is significantly different" from its predecessor, signalling deliberate design and narrative shifts rather than a straightforward continuation. The director framed those differences as part of a broader ambition for the trilogy's middle chapter.

Work on the currently-untitled third and final instalment of the trilogy continues, with Hamaguchi reporting that development is progressing well despite the absence of a firm release date. The studio's dual focus on delivering performance-optimised ports and advancing the new game has informed scheduling and resource allocation across teams.

The Switch 2 ports underline Square Enix's commitment to making the remake trilogy available on Nintendo's latest hardware, while also presenting the studio with logistical and creative challenges as it prepares the concluding entry. Hamaguchi's comments frame the past months as intense but forward-moving for the project.
