God of War: Sons of Sparta, a pixel‑art 2D action prequel, has launched for PlayStation 5. The title is developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio.
The game follows a young Kratos and his brother Deimos as they face a series of threats designed to test their training and force them to confront "the true meaning of duty and honor." Presented in a retro, pixelated style, Sons of Sparta adopts side‑scrolling action mechanics rather than the cinematic third‑person combat of the mainline series.
Mega Cat Studios, known most recently for backyard sports‑themed projects, collaborated with Santa Monica Studio to bring this early chapter of Kratos’s life to modern consoles. The release follows Sony and Santa Monica Studio's broader tease of remakes for the original God of War trilogy, offering a stopgap experience for fans ahead of larger projects.
Sons of Sparta is not the first God of War prequel or pixelated Kratos outing. The PSP entry Ghost of Sparta previously explored Deimos’s story, while God of War: Betrayal, a 2007 mobile title, presented an early pixel‑style take on the character. Sons of Sparta, however, places players furthest back in Kratos’s timeline to date.
The game is available now on PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store.
