Amanita Design has put out a playable demo for Phonopolis, their new 3D adventure rendered in handcrafted cardboard visuals. You play as Felix, a young man who shields himself with headphones as he races to stop an authoritarian Leader from broadcasting a world-changing sound across the city.
- Demo release: A hands-on build is now available so players can sample Phonopolis’ puzzles, atmosphere and presentation ahead of the full release.
- Developer pedigree: Created by Amanita Design, the studio behind Samorost, Creaks and Machinarium, the project continues their tradition of striking art design and inventive puzzle work.
- Visuals and tone: The game uses a tactile cardboard aesthetic in a fully three-dimensional space, blending whimsical craftwork with a darker, propaganda-driven cityscape.
- Sound as a mechanic: The narrative centers on loudspeaker-driven control and a looming broadcast called the Absolute Tone; Felix’s headphones are key to resisting mass manipulation, suggesting audio plays a core role in puzzles and encounters.
- Protest and puzzle themes: Expect to confront public megaphones, unravel sonic schemes and navigate environments that mix political allegory with Amanita’s signature curiosity-driven gameplay.
