Developer and publisher Unknown Worlds Entertainment will release Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero on 17 February. The upgraded editions deliver improved performance and visuals for Nintendo's next‑generation handheld-console hybrid, alongside control refinements for the platform.
Both titles have received graphical upgrades for Switch 2. When docked, the games target 1440p resolution; handheld mode supports 1080p. Frame rates are also increased, with both docked and handheld play running at 60 FPS. Controller support has been updated for the new hardware, with optimised Joy-Con 2 controls intended to provide more precise movement and refined interaction.
Unknown Worlds highlighted the importance of the community around the series. Producer Michael Varette said: "What has always made Subnautica special is the community around it, from the stories players share to the discoveries they make and the sense of wonder that comes from exploring an unknown world together. Bring Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero to Nintendo Switch 2 is about welcoming new players into that community, while giving longtime fans a chance to explore these worlds again in a way that feels fresh, smooth, and more immersive."
Players who already own Subnautica or Subnautica: Below Zero on Nintendo Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 Editions free of charge via the Nintendo eShop. Unknown Worlds has positioned the releases as a way to introduce new players while offering returning players a smoother and more immersive experience on Switch 2.
Separately, Unknown Worlds has published a fifth developer vlog for the in-development Subnautica 2, focusing on new multiplayer features. Game Informer has published reviews of Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero for further reading.
